ABOUT IRWIN POLISHOOK \n<\/h3>\nDr. Irwin H. Polishook (1935\u20132019) was a CUNY historian, professor, and a founding leader of the \nProfessional Staff Congress (PSC\/CUNY). He taught colonial American history at Hunter College and \nlater at Lehman College, and served on the doctoral faculty of the CUNY Graduate Center.

\nPolishook became PSC president in 1976 and led the union for 24 years, succeeding Belle Zeller. \nDuring his presidency, he helped negotiate the union\u2019s early contracts and led the PSC through the \nNew York City fiscal crisis of the 1970s and the major challenges facing CUNY in the 1990s. He was \na strong advocate for preserving CUNY as a unified public university and for protecting access to \npublic higher education.

\nHis leadership extended beyond CUNY. He was a prominent voice for higher education within the \nAmerican Federation of Teachers and held leadership positions with New York State United \nTeachers, the New York City Municipal Labor Committee, and the American Association of University \nProfessors. He retired as PSC president in 2000.

\nIn 2000, the Trustees of the Belle Zeller Scholarship Trust Fund named the scholarship for CUNY \ndoctoral students in his honor, recognizing his contributions to CUNY, unionism in higher education, \nand the academic community.

\n THE IRWIN POLISHOOK SCHOLARSHIP \n<\/h3>\n\nThe Irwin Polishook Scholarship provides a $5,000 award to an outstanding doctoral student \nat the CUNY Graduate Center. The scholarship is part of the Belle Zeller Scholarship Trust Fund and \nreflects Polishook\u2019s lifelong commitment to academic excellence, CUNY, and the advancement of \nhigher education.
